Debbie Vassallo is the owner/operator of PURE Dog Agility & Training in southwestern Ontario and Founder of Canine Hoopers of Canada.
“I embarked on my hooper journey in 2017 when my 3-year-old Border Collie, Twist, developed issues with her lower lumbar and rear-end muscles. The sports vet advised allowing her to run but avoiding jumping, tight turns, hard stops, or weaving. Twist thrived on training, agility, and staying active, so I sought an alternative to keep her body and mind engaged. After thorough research, we discovered hoopers and immediately recognized it as the ideal solution for her, with the European style of hoopers proving to be perfect.
After starting my education in Hoopers, I earned an instructor's certificate and began offering classes. It quickly became clear how beneficial Hoopers training is for dogs of all ages. Acknowledging its popularity in Europe, I set out to introduce this sport to Canada and create a titling program similar to agility. This was the beginning of my mission to develop a Canadian Hoopers System, supported by insights and guidance from several European contacts.
Canine Hoopers of Canada was launched in 2023. Since then, we have several certified judges across the country, over 300 members and dogs registered, booked many in-person trials, and run very successful virtual trials. Clubs are adding classes to their schedules, and people are training in their backyards.
We are committed to refining and adapting CHC rules to suit our needs in Canada. Our aim is to ensure this sport remains safe and inclusive for all dogs.”
